After they both left big tech, former colleagues Ashley and Belle set out to build a business that would let two mothers do interesting work on their own terms. And jewellery, as it turned out, was the thing they couldn’t stop talking about.

Offering fine jewellery set with both lab and natural diamonds, Carat Heritage meets customers at their private showroom on Orchard Road. Ninety percent of their customers buy custom-made pieces, from one-of-a-kind solitaire rings shaped exactly to personal preference and made to stack with existing rings, to eternity bands and tennis bracelets built in your exact width and solid gold type.

Priced for everyday wear instead of being locked away in the safe, many of their pieces are bought by women for themselves to celebrate significant milestones, anniversaries and birthdays. The appointments are unhurried and there’s no hard selling. Clients come in, sit down and are walked through a curated selection as their preferences take shape.

A design is commissioned with a $100 fee; the in-house gemmologist then handpicks diamonds from hundreds of options, and 3D drawings are shared for approval before anything is made. Once confirmed, the piece is handcrafted and finished by master jewellers whose families have been at the bench for three generations.

Custom work typically takes four to eight weeks. Clients are also happy to know that every piece carries a lifetime warranty on resizing, repairs and adjustments.
