5 Questions to Ask Any Jeweller Before You Buy

Jewellery Shopping Tips

Buying your first piece of fine jewellery — an engagement ring, a milestone gift, or something just for yourself — can feel like standing in front of a wall of sparkle with no idea where to start. The truth most people discover too late is that the ring matters, but the jeweller matters just as much. A good jeweller will explain the trade-offs honestly, show you certification without being asked, and stand behind the piece long after you’ve walked out the door.

Whether you’re looking at lab-grown or mined diamonds, these are the five questions that separate a trustworthy jeweller from a salesperson hoping you won’t ask. Bring them to every appointment.

1. Can I see the diamond’s certification?

This is the single most important question, and a confident jeweller will have the answer ready before you finish asking. Every diamond worth buying should come with an independent grading report from a respected laboratory — most commonly IGI (International Gemological Institute) or GIA (Gemological Institute of America). The report is your objective, third-party record of exactly what you’re paying for: the diamond’s carat weight, colour, clarity, cut, and measurements.

Be cautious of any jeweller who is vague about certification, offers only an in-house “certificate,” or treats the question as a nuisance. At Carat Heritage, every diamond is IGI-certified — the report comes with the stone, and we’ll walk you through it line by line so you understand what each grade actually means.

Quick tip for first-time buyers

Ask to see the report number and check that it matches the diamond. A genuine certificate is tied to a specific stone, not a generic quality claim. At Carat Heritage, we have specialized tools on site for you to view the IGI numbers on the girdles of the diamonds and hallmarking on every piece of jewellery.

2. Do you understand the 4Cs — and can you explain them simply?

The 4Cs — cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight — are the universal language of diamond quality. A skilled jeweller should be able to explain each one in plain English and, more importantly, help you decide which ones matter most for your budget and taste.

  • Cut — how well the diamond is proportioned and faceted. This is what creates sparkle, and it’s arguably the most important of the four.
  • Colour — how colourless the diamond is, graded on a scale from D (completely colourless) downwards.
  • Clarity — how free the stone is from natural inclusions, viewed under magnification.
  • Carat — the diamond’s weight, which influences its size on the finger.

A good jeweller won’t just recite definitions — they’ll show you. We hand-select every diamond at VS1 clarity and F colour and above, and during your appointment we use a loupe so you can see the clarity and cut quality with your own eyes, including the Hearts and Arrows symmetry that signals a truly precise cut.

3. Lab-grown or mined — and what’s the real difference?

If you’re new to diamonds, this is where a lot of confusion (and a fair bit of myth) lives. A transparent jeweller will give you a straight answer: lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. They share the identical chemical composition, crystal structure, hardness, and brilliance of mined diamonds. The only difference is origin — one forms in the earth, the other in a controlled laboratory.

Lab-grown diamonds let you prioritise size, design, or quality within your budget, without the environmental and ethical concerns of mining. That’s why they’ve moved firmly into the mainstream — more than half of engagement rings sold in the U.S. now feature lab-grown diamonds.

What you should watch for is honesty about what you’re buying. A reputable jeweller will never pass off a lab-grown diamond as mined, or vice versa. We specialise in lab-grown diamonds and are completely transparent about it — because the value proposition speaks for itself: the same beauty and durability, responsibly made, at a far more accessible price.

4. Can the ring be resized, repaired, and maintained — and is there a warranty?

A diamond is forever, but a setting needs care. Prongs can loosen, bands wear over years of daily wear, and finger sizes change. Before you buy, ask exactly what happens afterwards: Can the ring be resized? What does a repair cost? Is there a warranty, and what does it cover?

This question quietly reveals how a jeweller views the relationship. Order-takers are focused on the sale. Genuine craftspeople expect to see you again.

Carat Heritage offers a lifetime warranty covering resizing, repairs, and adjustments — so the piece you choose stays as beautiful as the day you received it.

5. Who makes the jewellery, and how long will it take?

Craftsmanship determines how securely your centre stone is set, how comfortable the ring feels, and how well it holds up over decades. Ask who actually makes the piece, how much bridal and fine-jewellery experience they have, and — if you’re customising — how long it will take from design to delivery.

Always give your jeweller your timeline early, especially if there’s a proposal or occasion attached. A trustworthy jeweller will give you a realistic completion date rather than an optimistic one, and will keep you updated through every stage.

Our pieces are handcrafted by master jewellers with over 20 years of experience and three generations of expertise, originally working with European fine-jewellery houses. Most custom pieces are ready within 6 to 10 weeks, and we stay in close contact with you throughout the design process.

The bottom line

The right questions protect you from overpaying, from misrepresentation, and from a piece that doesn’t last. But they also do something more valuable: they help you find a jeweller you can trust — someone who guides rather than pushes, explains rather than dodges, and is still there for you years after the purchase.

If you’d like to experience what that looks like in person, book a private appointment at our Centrepoint showroom. We’ll answer all five of these questions — and any others you bring — over a relaxed, no-pressure consultation.
