IGI vs GIA Certified Diamonds: What Every Buyer in Singapore Should Know
Certification is your diamond's birth certificate — but not all certificates are equal. Here's how to read them with confidence before you buy.
When you're investing in a lab-grown diamond — whether it's an engagement ring, a tennis bracelet, or a pair of ear studs — the certificate attached to that stone matters enormously. It tells you exactly what you're getting, protects you from misrepresentation, and shapes the long-term value of your piece.
The two names you'll encounter most often are IGI (International Gemological Institute) and GIA (Gemological Institute of America). Both are globally recognised. Both grade diamonds using the industry-standard 4Cs. But they are not interchangeable — and understanding the differences will help you choose wisely.
What Is GIA?
The Gemological Institute of America was founded in 1931 and is widely considered the gold standard in diamond certification. GIA is a non-profit organisation, which means its grading is entirely independent and not influenced by commercial pressures. Crucially, GIA invented the 4Cs grading system — carat, cut, colour, and clarity — that the entire industry now uses.
GIA is known for its conservative, precise grading. A stone graded VS1 by GIA is very reliably VS1. For decades, GIA focused primarily on natural mined diamonds, only introducing full lab-grown diamond grading reports in 2020.
What Is IGI?
The International Gemological Institute was founded in 1975 in Antwerp and has since grown into one of the largest independent gemological laboratories in the world, with offices in Antwerp, New York, Mumbai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and more.
IGI was the first major lab to offer comprehensive grading reports for lab-grown diamonds, establishing the benchmarks that buyers and retailers now rely on. This gives IGI a distinct edge in the lab diamond space: deep experience, volume expertise, and faster turnaround times.

GIA vs IGI: A direct comparison
| Factor | GIA | IGI |
|---|---|---|
| Founded | 1931 (USA) | 1975 (Belgium) |
| Organisation type | Non-profit | For-profit |
| Grading strictness | Very conservative; widely considered the strictest | Reliable and thorough; perceived as slightly more lenient, especially for natural diamonds |
| Lab-grown expertise | Full reports since 2020; growing presence | Pioneer in lab-grown grading; most widely used for lab diamonds globally |
| Report detail | Highly detailed; includes inclusion plots, proportions, symmetry, polish | Comprehensive; includes growth method, diamond type, appraised value in some reports |
| Certification cost | Higher | More affordable |
| Turnaround time | Longer | Faster |
| Resale value (natural) | Stronger; preferred by high-end auction houses | Acceptable; less preferred for investment-grade natural stones |
| Resale value (lab-grown) | Comparable for lab diamonds | Industry standard; no meaningful disadvantage for lab stones |
Does the grading difference actually matter?
This is where things get nuanced. For natural mined diamonds — particularly investment-grade stones where you're buying for long-term value and possible resale — GIA's stricter grading can matter. A stone graded H colour by GIA is more reliably H than one graded H by IGI; the latter might lean toward G. Auction houses and high-end resellers often insist on GIA for natural diamonds.
For lab-grown diamonds, the picture is different. IGI has been grading lab stones since before GIA even offered the service. Its graders have handled a vastly larger volume of CVD and HPHT diamonds, and the industry has broadly converged on IGI as the default certification for lab-grown stones. There is no meaningful reputational gap when it comes to lab diamonds.
One practical tip: if buying an IGI-certified lab diamond, prioritise VVS2 clarity or above and E colour or above. IGI's lenient tendencies are more pronounced at lower grades — staying in the higher tiers ensures your stone delivers on its certification.

What Carat Heritage uses — and why
At Carat Heritage, all of our lab-grown diamonds are IGI certified. We chose IGI because it is the global benchmark for lab-grown diamonds — it was the first lab to develop grading parameters specifically for these stones, and it remains the most widely trusted certification in the lab diamond space.
Typically, every diamond 0.5ct and above will come with it's own IGI certificate. In addition, we provide the option to send customized bracelets and earrings that may often contain diamonds less than 0.5ct to be IGI certified. This comes at an additional fee and may take 2-4 additional weeks.
Although we specialise in lab grown diamonds, we also source for GIA certified natural diamonds for various customers who may prefer them.
Every diamond we source undergoes independent grading. When you receive your certificate, it details the stone's cut, colour, clarity, carat weight, growth method, and laser inscription number — so you know exactly what sits in your jewellery, and can verify it independently at any time.
We also walk every client through their stone's certificate at our appointment. Understanding what you're buying isn't a bonus — it's part of the experience.
Common questions about diamond certification
Can I trust an IGI-certified lab diamond as much as a GIA one?
For lab-grown diamonds, yes. IGI is the dominant, specialist certifier for lab stones. The grading methodology is rigorous and the reports are comprehensive. The prestige gap between GIA and IGI, which exists for natural diamonds, is largely absent in the lab-grown space.
What does a diamond certificate actually include?
Both GIA and IGI reports cover the 4Cs (cut, colour, clarity, carat), plus measurements, proportions, symmetry, polish, fluorescence, and a unique identification number. For lab-grown stones, IGI additionally specifies the growth method (CVD or HPHT) and diamond type. Some IGI reports also include an estimated appraised value, useful for insurance purposes.
Does certification affect the price of the diamond?
Yes, indirectly. GIA-certified natural diamonds tend to carry a premium because of the institute's conservative grading — buyers pay more for the confidence that the grade is accurate. IGI certification costs less for the jeweller, and those savings can be passed on. For lab diamonds, where IGI is the standard, this is simply the norm rather than a trade-off.
Should I be wary of other certifications?
In Singapore's diamond market, you may also encounter certificates from HRD (Antwerp) and GCAL (Gem Certification & Assurance Lab), both of which are reputable. Be more cautious with lesser-known labs or in-house certifications from retailers — these have no independent oversight and can be inconsistent. Always look for an independent third-party certificate.
Can I verify my diamond's certificate online?
Yes. Both GIA and IGI maintain online databases where you can enter your certificate number and verify the grading details independently. This is especially useful when buying pre-owned pieces or confirming a stone matches its paperwork.
